BRIDAL HAIR ADVICE | GHD HAIRSTYLE ADVICE

You've got the dress, and now it's time to decide on a hairstyle. ghd's Jo Robertson reveals her expert tips to ensure your bridal hairstyle looks perfect on your wedding day

"The most important thing when you're considering your wedding day hairstyle is not to change who you are!"

When it comes to wedding hair, a lot of brides think they need to go on this dramatic journey of change, such wanting to grow their hair, or grow a fringe out. You must remember to be yourself and not to change your style dramatically. No-one wants to see a bride that's unrecognisable on the day!

BUILD A HAIR RELATIONSHIP

They key to having the perfect bridal hairstyle really does depend on the hair relationship you have with your stylist - this is such a key part of looking good, and feeling good on your big day. Make sure you have regular appointments so your hairdresser knows your hair, knows your face shape, knows that (for example) when you’re blow-drying it you need extra volume on your crown or you need width at the side and work your haircuts around that.

"BRIDAL HAIR DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN LONG HAIR! DON'T BE TEMPTED TO GO FOR EXTENSIONS IF THAT'S NOT YOUR PERSONAL STYLE"

WHICH STYLES ARE BEST SUITED TO MY DRESS?

There are lots of factors to consider, but the neckline of your dress denotes everything. It's best to work your hairstyle around this so that you have a seamless look on thte day. My top tip is that when you're in the shop, trying on your dress, lift all your hair away so you are able to see the neckline. For example, if you're trying on a one shoulder dress, you'll see that if the strap goes to the left, your hair could be worn up to the left, perhaps in a loose side-bun, as you won't lose the detailing of the one-shoulder design.

I'M HAVING A DESTINATION WEDDING. IT'S GOING TO BE HOT AND HUMID - WHAT SHOULD I DO?

This is down to personal choice. If you’re getting married on the beach and you want to wear it down, be prepared for it to get windswept and look undone. If you're having hot weather wedding, I would definitely recommended adding a wave or some texture into your hair. Something that’s more ruffled without looking dishevelled. Grab and pin styles work so well for this type of look. It looks like you’ve thrown it up yourself and its taken seconds, but of course, it hasn’t!

I WANT TWO LOOKS ON MY BIG DAY. WHAT WILL WORK BEST?

Never start up and work your way down! This is because you’ll have pin marks where your hair has been pinned up during the day and when you take it down, it’ll form that shape unless you have time to wash your hair and start again from scratch. If your hair has been half-up, half-down during the day, you can do a grab and grip side chignon using the texture from the day do. It’s really simple, you just grab hair, scrunch it up, and pin it together at the nape of your neck. It takes minutes!

THE WEDDING'S OVER AND NOW I'M OFF ON MY HONEYMOON. ANY TIPS FOR LOOKING FAB WHEN I'M FLYING LONG HAUL?

I would say some kind of texture braid, or knotted braid. Something that’s loose and without pin as you want to be comfortable. And, when you undo the braid, you'll be left with lots of wavy texture!
